Thanks for this; it dovetails really well with a framework I've followed for the past year of Doing Quests, Not Goals. The piece about identity is where they overlap: being someone who chooses to do a particular thing, to take on a certain type of endeavor.
Excellent post. I once was in a small start up, and my partner was all about systems. "Don't focus on sales", he said, "but on stuff you can control, like how may contacts are you making, and do you return calls/emails promptly, etc". It was effective.
Totally! I think one of the best parts of his book is how winners and losers have the same goal. So what truly makes the difference? I use this to motivate my high school volleyball team to be more conscientious in practice. Do all the little things right!
Great article Tobias and a great breakdown of Clear’s habit stacking theory (one of my favorites!).
Consistency does not rise from isolated moments of extreme will power (there is already a term for that, it’s called heroism and if you need that consistently you really need to look at your system!), it rises from habit.
Whether in personal action or that of leading teams to achieve results, habit based systems beat isolated heroism every time!
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” What an amazing statement. Consistency is the key to achieving any goal.

Thanks for sharing this framework.
Great newsletter. Repeating the process over and over. “Work the system not the job,” I always say
Thank you!
That is a great saying.
I told this to people every day when I’m teaching them to be successful
Good habits are crucial for improvement.
They definitely are!

Exactly, that’s quite an Aha-moment. At least it was for me.
That’s an awesome way to implement it.
