My first solo travel was when I went to France. It was to see a friend, and also go to a WordPress conference. I'm not as adventurous as you because I did make some plans on what museums or places to visit, but not very detailed ones because I know plans always change. When I went to Paris, I didn't know that city alone had 100s of museums and so I was only able to see about 6 of them. Need to go back.
I lived in china when I was 17. Before smartphones, before social media. It was a life changing experience. Crazy different culture, I was from a small town in the south of Brazil and nobody actually spoke very good English. Could even be a little traumatic to be honest 🤣 but it definitely helped me to be who I am today!
I love this! Thanks for sharing! Reminded me of my solo 3 months in Japan this year! Can’t wait to hear some of your stories. I loved my time in the Japanese Alps, particularly in Kamikochi- let me know if you need a Ryoken recommendation for the area:)
I have solo traveling (not just a weekend getaway) on my list when my kids are older. It does sound liberating, not in a way of escaping a family, but in a way of discovering how will I react to certain situations and circumstances.
They say to travel with your partner before getting married to really get to know them before tying the knot. But the even more fundamental step is to know yourself, and solo travel is amazing for that!
What an awesome read! I did a few solo’ish trips in my twenties. I think it’s definitely time to do one again thank you for the reminder.
Completely relatedly unrelated - Now and again I’ll challenge myself while waiting in a queue to not focus on my phone and be aware of my surroundings and the people around me. It’s almost like a brief solo trip - being all alone and attempting to engage with strangers.
I love solo travel. The freedom of doing things on my own time, exploring places and foods without worrying about travel companions and their preferences. Visited Beijing, London and Paris solo. Wouldn’t change it for the world.
You've really encouraged me to try and overcome the fear of travelling alone.

Went to Switzerland and started rough but ultimately best time I ever had and I was by myself.
I traveled to London alone two times : 1993 for three weeks and 1994 for ten weeks.
Totally get this.. Traveling alone taught me that freedom isn’t about distance.. it’s about trusting your own rhythm..

Did this in 2023 on the Camino de Santiago. Best experience ever!
