I recently started using Loop Dream ear plugs. Totally improved my sleep. ( I have a train nearby). Also all your tips are so great. Here's to sleep!!!!
Yes! Americans shun sleep and brag about living on less than 6 hours. We need it and everything you said is true, especially the smart phone. Also I don't have a TV in the bedroom.
The final thing I need is some blackout shades for my living room.
Despite having a 1-bed apartment, my room has an intentionally-designed gap at the top of the wall so light from the living room gets in in the morning before I plan to wake up.
Truth. Sleep is the foundation of all other health and all things in life. Nail sleep and you're golden. Skimp on it and face the consequences. We don't run on pixie dust, but solid biology. Get your beauty sleep.
Brilliant. agree with it all. I have suffered terribly with sleep for most of the past 15 months when I experienced a personal tragedy and my sleep collapsed.
I have been looking into how to improve sleep for the last 7 months or so trying to calibrate perfect sleep with detailed back and forth strategies with A.I. ...kiwis for serotonin, walnuts for melatonin .. blue blocking glasses, grounding earth sheets, cutting out television to close to bed, avoiding socials, turning the electricity off, turning the wi-fi off, monitoring everything with my oura ring. All useful but what really moved the needle is what you clarified.
You have simplified it beautifully, and I have reached a very similar understanding and its a joy to read... consistency, discipline, avoiding scrolling, avoiding caffeine late, avoiding heavy meals, working hard, concentrating on productive work, all helps to build sleep pressure and the more constant it becomes, it becomes its own flywheel (great word description)
Great reminder that energy is really a system. I’ve noticed the same thing. When sleep becomes disciplined and consistent, so many other areas of life improve almost automatically. It’s not glamorous, but it’s probably the most underrated performance habit people ignore. Appreciate you breaking it down so simply.
Great piece and very true. Humans are the only species which alter their sleep cycle. An excellent book on the subject is Mathew Walker's 'Why We Sleep'.
After decades of shift work and proudly developing 'zombie powers' it wasn't until I was pulled off the line and medically retired I realized how fkd my body and mind were from lack of sleep.
From 24 hour shifts, on call for SWAT, on call for fire investigations, and Task Force callouts it destroyed my already crappy sleep.
I have not turned on the tones/ringer on my phone since July of 2024 nor do I intend to.

It's infuriating. What a stupid design choice!

I agree so much. Sleep is key to energy and recovery! I’ve always wondered about the benefits of a sleep mask if the room is already dark?
